About the Department

The plant science Department at Woldia University College of Agricultural Sciences has been actively involved in teaching, research, and community service since 2013. Currently, the department offers an undergraduate program in plant Science and postgraduate (MSc) programs in Horticulture. The department has 20 active staff members, including 2 PhD holders (1 Assistant professor and 1 promoted associate professor), 13 lecturers, 2 technical assistants, and 3 PhD candidates pursuing their PhD studies. To support practical learning, a nursery farm is already operational and tissue culture and green house facilities are in the process of being established. Additionally, equipment for plant Genetics and Breeding laboratories has been ordered and will be installed to enhance research, learning and community service to achieve the following objectives of the department:

  •  To produce adequate and well-trained manpower that will regionally, nationally and internationally contribute to generation, dissemination and adoption of improved plant production and protection technologies;
  • To provide students with basic and applied knowledge of natural resources
    (soils, agricultural waters and forestry); and field, horticultural and industrial
    crops production and protection;
  • To enable the students, understand and comprehend problems in cropproduction and seek solutions through exposure to research, extensionandmanagement;
  • To enable the students, gain the skill and knowledge of proper management
    and conservation of natural resources and protecting the environment;
  • To provide the students with the knowledge of handling plants and their
    products;
  • To integrate training-research-extension to increase the efficiency of plant technology generation, dissemination and adoption by end-users and, thereby, contribute to the intended regional and national development;
  • To enable students to conduct relevant research in plant science in problems that affect the region and the nations; and
  • To provide professional services to the community and policy makers at large.
